GM’s Cruze to determine company future
General Motors’s new compact car, Chevrolet Cruze, is crucial to determine how profitable the company will be and could become the most important car for GM in decades, analyst said.
Being GM’s biggest début this fall, the Cruz is designed to compete with the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and new small cars from Ford Motor and Hyundai in the US, China and other international markets.
“The Volt is getting all the publicity, but it’s the Cruze that certainly is most important, in volume and in proving that GM can make a small car in the United States and do it profitably,” said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst with Edmunds.com.
It is considered that the Cruze can determine how profitable GM can become or drag the automaker into bankruptcy, by its ability to attract global buyers.
Compact car segment becomes an important part in the US and global markets. It has contributed to nearly a third of the worldwide auto sales.
Due to the growing worldwide demand, the Cruze is GM’s first truly global car designed for international markets. Under 6,000 Cruzes were sold since September when the model was first introduced in the US market, and 300,000 Cruzes have been sold worldwide.
