Found this great You Tube video on the cruze engine. Really sounds good and put together well. Love the idea of a timing CHAIN instead of a belt.

 

Nice motor. When have they used timing belts? I wasn't aware of an engine that didn't use a chain for timing.

 

Believe me, lots of cars including my Chrysler PT Cruiser which I just paid $1200 parts and labor to have changed. 7 hours labor involved in that one and the car that I'm trading in for the Cruze, my wife's KIA has a $1000, 60,000 mile service coming up that involves the timing belt also.

 

Hmmm I'll keep that in mind whenever I look at vehicles to purchase. A belt for timing just doesn't seem too reliable to me.

 

It all sounds good, and the 100,000 mile 5 year warranty makes you feel better about trying an engine that is so new.

 

Timing belts are on pretty much every engine except for the few that use chains. The reasoning for a belt is that it's quieter than a chain. Here's some info:

Crewzin, I saw that video a while back, and I too am very impressed by this engine. I like that it's made in the US, I like that it's turbocharged, and I really like how easy it appears to be to work on. I can't wait to get the chance to work on a Cruze since it's just so well made!

 

Virtually all Hondas, Toyotas, etc., have a timing belt that must be replaced every 60,000 miles. In many cases, failure of the belt will destroy the engine.

 

Most new Toyotas have timing chains as far as I know. Which ones are still using belts?

 

New ones do, indeed, have chains. I can't find when they changed, but it's fairly recently, since 2000 at least.
